Welcome to our review of Cayo Costa State Park campground.

General Information:
Cayo Costa State Park , the “jewel of the Gulf coast” is one of the largest underdeveloped barrier islands remaining in Florida, located twelve miles west of Cape Coral in Lee County. The island is pristine, undeveloped and contains unique tropical vegetation and is accessible only by private boat or passenger ferry. Fishing, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, shelling, hiking, and biking (bikes for rent on the island) are all things to do while exploring this beautiful island. And of course, the island is great for bird watching. The state park web site has a complete list of resident birds. The island is approximately seven miles long and has nearly nine and one-half miles of pristine beach on the Gulf of Mexico as well as pine forests, oak-palm hammocks and mangrove swamps.

Many tourists come only for the day, but overnight camping is available. No RVs of course, only tent camping is allowed with cabins available for rent.

Beautiful View:
Campsites seem to be set far enough away from the beach that you can’t see the water from the campground; but the camp sites are enclosed by beautiful, lush, tropical vegetation which in itself provides an attractive view from your campsite. No recommendations for best sites here since none have direct views of the Gulf. As with most Florida State Parks, everything is very well maintained and native vegetation surrounding the campsites is attractive. The main reason people camp at this park is to visit the island and the beautiful pristine beach. So this is not the type of camping experience where you’ll want to stay around at the campground during the day.

As always, for a better sense of the views available at this campground or any campground featured in Camping With A View, make sure you look at the photos and read some of the reviews from other campers by clicking on the links found in the campground menu at the top of this page.

Campground Details:
The campground includes 42 cabins and tent sites. There is no electricity at the park and there are no stores or restaurants on the island. There are modern restrooms with flush toilets and cold showers at the campground. Neither the cabins nor the tent campsites have water or electricity. All Florida state parks are open year-round; but there may be restrictions on the camping season. Call the state park for more information on campground opening and closing dates. For more information on the state park or campground call 941-964-0375.

Summary:
Undeveloped, beautiful and pristine, Cayo Costa State Park offers primitive tent camping and a chance to see Florida as it existed hundreds of years ago. Leave your RV behind at the ferry service (parking for a fee) and come rough it for a night or two while tent camping on the island or stay in one of the park maintained cabins. This is a very beautiful island filled with beautiful, scenic views.
