Bahia Honda has a reputation for some of the best snorkeling in the Florida Keys. You can see a variety of sea life just a few hundred feet from the shore. The snorkeling is good for beginners because the water is shallow (four to six feet). Marine life includes soft corals, small coral heads, tropical fish, Queen Conchs and spiny lobster. There is an excellent snorkeling guide at the state park web site that gives simple, easy to read descriptions of the various types of marine life you may see while snorkeling here. Go to the “Park Activities” section and then scroll down to the section on snorkeling. You’ll be able to print out this simple and very interesting eight page guide.

Birding is also a popular activity at Bahia Honda State Park. It is especially good for viewing wading birds and shorebirds. There are shallow sand flats during low tide on the ocean side of the island where the birds feed and rest. Species of shorebirds include Willets, Sanderlings, Ruddy Turnstones, Short-billed Dowitchers and Plovers. Several species of wading birds include Great White Herons, Great Blue Herons, Tri-colored Herons, Great Egrets, Snowy Egrets and White Ibis. During the fall hawk migration, from mid-September to mid-November you’ll see a variety of hawks soaring overhead. See a complete list of birds found here at the state park web site.
